Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to consider some of the causes and conse- quences of organisational change in the UK commercial banking indus- try. It examines how, and why, banks have moved in a relatively short space of time from simple - some would say simplistic - organisational forms to more complex structures, which attempt to reflect more faith- fully the complexities of the markets in which they now operate. It identifies some of the main issues which the banks have had to face as they have sought to find the best fit between their chosen strategies on the one hand and their organisational structures and management proc- esses on the other, with a view to maximising the extent of goal congru- ence within the organisation and minimising the risk of dysfunctionality.
