The Social Composition of the Traders at the Nizhnii Novgorod Fair

Abstract

Just as the value and diversity of goods sold at Nizhnii boggled the imagination, so did the number and types of people converging at this bustling, international marketplace. Where in June there stood the empty stone structure of the gostinyi dvor, there appeared in July throngs of merchants, industrialists, peasants, labourers, innkeepers, entertainers, Europeans, Russians, Armenians and Asians. The Russian merchant, whose day-to-day contacts were relatively limited at home, suddenly found himself doing business and living in close quarters with individuals of widely divergent social backgrounds, different religions and different customs.
