Abstract

The day begins with reporter Nick Farrow arriving about 4.30 am or soon after, followed by reporter-presenter Sue Wilkins at 5.45 or thereabouts. They prepare for the 2½ minute North-East bulletins, to be inserted into BBC l’s Breakfast Time at 7.15, 7.45 and 8.15, and then for a 3-minute bulletin just before 9 am. (As before, the term ‘reporter’ is used in its broad sense, not in the terms of BBC hierarchy.) The late reporter ought to have left enough to fill the bulletin, but Nick wants to get in as much new material as he can. 5 to 7 items will be the average. Sue will be reading the bulletins — putting herself on air, alone in the studio and on cue from London, pushing the buttons for the pictures. There is no teleprompt. It is just 6 months since she completed the BBC training course, but she had had 3 or 4 years’ experience as a newspaper journalist (mainly at the Wokingham Times) before that; previously, London University, English degree.
