East and West: the Scotsman and the Glasgow Herald

Abstract

The Scotsman and the Glasgow Herald are old rivals who enjoy their rivalry. The Herald tells us every day that it is 207 or more years old: The Scotsman is a little younger. One dominates the West of Scotland, the other the East. Both are ‘heavy’ newspapers, with good cover of national and international events and with substantial business news. Both have had unhappy periods: the Herald in the mid-1960s and early 1970s, with changes of owner and editors who moved away from its broadly liberal tradition; and The Scotsman more recently with management policies which demoralised its journalists and caused a competent editor to resign.
