What to Look For

Abstract

The chapters which follow are case studies of individual newspapers, regional television news, and local radio. They deal with daily routine — how the news is gathered, how decisions are taken on what to publish or broadcast, and how the news is presented — but they also reveal the responsibility placed on young journalists. Men and women only 2 or 3 years out of school or university may find themselves in charge of early morning radio news bulletins. They are often alone, with nobody to whom to turn for advice, and they must make their own decisions. They must read the news, precisely on the hour or half hour, and push the right knobs to bring up pre-recorded items or interviews. And mostly they love it, in spite of the nervous strain.
