Abstract

Ghana experienced her first serious bout of inflation in the mid-1960s. In terms of the national consumer price index the annual rate of inflation in 1964 was about 10 per cent and jumped to 26.4 per cent the next year. The rate of inflation slowed down a bit in 1966, and there followed three years of low inflation (below 10 per cent). The inflation rate was lowest in 1970 (3.9 per cent), but has generally increased since then and was as high as 116.3 per cent in 1977. The rate of inflation was 73.3 per cent in 1978 and hovered around 50 per cent during the next two years, but jumped again in 1981 to 117.1 per cent. It fell sharply to 22.3 per cent in 1982, but rose to 122.8 per cent in 1983. It was 40.2 per cent in 1984.
