Withdrawal from a Customs Union: a Macroeconomic Analysis

Abstract

With the example of the formation of the EC as a spur, economic analysis of the effects of economic integration has focussed on the issues raised by the formation and enlargement of a customs union and by the possibilities of monetary integration and economic union. Now that important political parties in both Greece and the UK are advocating withdrawal from the EC, however, it seems appropriate to change the focus of the analysis and to concentrate instead on the consequences of the regional economic disintegration associated with the withdrawal of one member country from an existing customs union.
