Abstract

Midland Components Engineering Division at Manchester supplies tools, machine parts and a machine repair service to a variety of companies in the fastener business including Midland Components’ own factories at Stalybridge and Stockport. The customer factories require a steady supply of ‘consumable’ tools such as dies and punches for the manufacturing of nuts, bolts, clips, etc. The tool shop of Engineering Division, with a turnover of £1.2 million, is the major production centre for these tools. The number of tools produced each year include 115,000 rolling and heading dies, 52,000 punches, 400,000 saws and 9000 cutters. The manufacture of the tool requires a blank (often a bar or strip of metal) to be processed on a series of machine tools, lathes, presses, grinders, etc. The blank itself is manufactured from bought-in stock in the Engineering Division’s own machine shop adjacent to the tool shop.
