Abstract

Have you ever heard of Joshua Slocum? Probably not. Slocum was the first person to attempt to sail alone around the world.1 On 24 April 1895, at the age of 51, he set sail from Boston in a boat that was about 12 meters long. Just over three years later, on 27 June 1898, he anchored again off Newport, the first solo sailor to circumnavigate the globe. The money he needed had been earned as he went.
