Abstract

In the past decade, organisations have focused on downsizing, rightsizing, re-engineering and a host of other changes in an attempt to improve productivity and competitiveness. Indeed, it is estimated that corporate America spends around $10 billion a year on restructuring.1 All this activity poses considerable challenges for senior level managers. They have a particular responsibility to direct and implement structural changes in their organisation. Ultimately, their goal is to emerge with a capable organisation – that is, one which can adapt more quickly than its competitors to the full range of external and internal threats.2
