Abstract

Quite clearly, joint ventures, alliances and other forms of collaborative agreements have achieved spectacular growth in the 1980s (see Doz, 1990). They have sometimes been described as more flexible mechanisms toward building competitive advantage than the traditional ‘internal development’ and ‘merger and acquisition’ routes. Indeed, some firms like NEC and Komatsu are reputed to have been particularly able at exploiting alliances to strengthen their competitive position (see Hamel, Doz and Prahalad, 1989).
