Abstract

Not long ago I had the pleasure of editing a collection of essays which were presented to Richard Goodwin on the occasion of his seventy-fifth birthday. I began my ‘Introduction’ to that collection of essays with some remarks on ratios between ages. I have no particular wish to make a habit of beginning introductions with observations about chronological curiosities, but I cannot refrain from noting — especially because the Farey series absorb much of my current research interests — that I first met Björn Thalberg twenty years ago when I was exactly half his age. Now, twenty years later, our ages are separated by my age when I first met him (give or take a few months).
