Lloyd’s: 300 Years of Tradition

Abstract

The first mention of Lloyd’s Coffee House is in the London Gazette of 18–21 February, 1688. Edward Lloyd made his coffee house a meeting place for merchants and insurers. He built on this by arranging a network of correspondents in ports throughout Britain and on the continent who could provide him with news of shipping movements. He also organized auctions of ships and equipment. In 1696, he started a regular bulletin, Lloyd’s News.
