Capital Adequacy: The Italian Experience

In: The Future of Financial Systems and Services

Abstract

Economic doctrine has dealt extensively with the capital of credit institutions, emphasising its importance from various points of view, according to the different functions it fulfils. Already at the beginning of this century some economists, while not ascribing any significant role to capital in the conduct of business, pointed out its importance for maintaining the public confidence in credit institutions and for protecting creditors.1
