Abstract

Approaching its 20th anniversary, ASEAN with its widely praised reputation as an oasis of political stability and as a growth centre within the troubled Third World is now facing serious challenges. Though there is no reason to worry about the political stability of the region in the near future, there are various developments within the region and its immediate surroundings that may accumulate in such a way as to undermine ASEAN’s long-term stability.
