Abstract

The Second Indochina War was a very different conflict from the First Indochina War. The war against the Americans was fought on a much broader scale than the war against the French and there was much greater involvement of masses of poor and middle-peasant men and women in the struggle. There was a broad-based resistance to the Americans which pre-dated the formation of the National Liberation Front and therefore the composition of the Front was more diverse than that of Viet Minh, and the Front enjoyed more active mass support.
