Abstract

Bald assertions that the number of in-house lawyers has grown because of increased government regulation or increased and more complex economic activity conceal the real question concerning in-house lawyer growth — why have not outside legal services expanded to meet these demands? Of course, part of the answer to this question is that they have expanded — the number of lawyers in general has risen in all industrialised societies. But the other part of the answer must deal with the fact that in-house legal services have also grown, and grown at a more rapid rate than the general population of lawyers. Why is this? What prompts companies to take the ‘legal leap’ and employ their own lawyers?
