Structure and Performance in British Banking, 1870–1939

Abstract

Was British1 banking competitive in the nineteenth century and, if so, did the degree of competitiveness diminish between 1870 and 1940? The answers to these questions are important for at least two reasons. The first would have us better informed about the supposed growth in the monopoly power of banking and the supernormal profits that are found there. The second would improve our understanding of the evolution and operation of monetary policy.
