Abstract

In this introductory chapter we attempt to provide a partial background to the analysis that our contributors articulate so eloquently. Inevitably, in a volume of this nature many gaps remain and while we make no pretence at filling them, we hope that in the pages that follow, these gaps will be somewhat reduced and that the ensuing chapters will be placed in perspective. An attempt is made to provide a perception of the alternative approaches, achievements, controversies and issues, and underlying tensions and their sources. The account is perforce selective and an attempt is made to be as impartial as humanly possible (i.e. to let the various protagonists speak for themselves), though I am fully aware that my own preferences and prejudices inevitably creep in.
