Abstract

The group of linked enterprises centred in the small steel working town of Mondragon in Guipuzcoa, the most densely populated and economically advanced of the four Basque provinces of Spain, has lately begun to attract increasing attention. In the space of less than one working life, the Mondragon enterprises have grown from nothing into a formidably successful grouping which employs more than 16 000 people in 70–80 separate undertakings, producing, in 1978, total sales of around £240m. The group includes agricultural and housing enterprises, retail stores, schools, its own social security organisation, a technical college, a research and development unit, and banking and management services (the Caja Laboral Popular: CLP). The leading sector from the outset, however, has been its industrial enterprises, which account for more than 80 per cent (currently 64) of all the Mondragon undertakings and include Spain’s leading producers of both domestic appliances and machine tools. This chapter outlines briefly the historical background, the institutional structures and comparative performance of these Basque enterprises.2
