Agriculture and Economic Development in Southern Africa

Abstract

The diversity of agro-ecological conditions and of types of agriculture practised in Southern Africa is such that one has to be either very brave or very naïve to attempt a bird’s-eye view of the subject. In a paper of the specified length there is, however, little scope for attempting much else, and I shall take the plunge, leaving it to the reader to decide on the courage, naïveté or other qualities revealed by the resulting effort. Be that as it may, I do believe that it is not only useful but essential to consider from a macro-economic perspective the context within which agriculture is practised, provided this does not become a screen for avoiding the micro-economic studies necessary to understand specific agricultural situations.1
