West Meets East: The Case of the Western-Trained Chinese Teacher

Abstract

This case is an interesting study of intercultural communication. It is the revealing story of a foreign student in the US, a Chinese teacher, who became immersed in US cultural norms concerning the importance of individuals thinking for themselves. On returning home, she attempted to imbue her Chinese students with the same values. At first glance, she appears to have achieved only limited success but deeper analysis reveals major developments not only in her students’ thinking but also in her own.
