Abstract

This chapter is a major update of an article published several years ago to present techniques for successful implementation of ERP systems (Norton 2002). I have led several implementations since that time and substantially fixed one previously failed implementation. In addition I am presenting an extensive analysis of a topic usually not discussed in text books on accounting, finance, or even information systems: taxonomy of information. This is the foundation of business systems, but people’s thinking about it is simplistic, outdated, and generally useless if not actually harmful. There is a better way.
