Abstract

In a 2008 interview with Fortune magazine’s senior editor, Betsy Morris, Steve Jobs said, “Recruiting is hard. It’s just finding the needles in the haystack. You can’t know enough in a one-hour interview, so in the end, it is ultimately based on your gut. How do I feel about this person?”1 When you are hiring your assistant, you must use the same good instincts and judgment you use in making every other business decision. As direct marketing specialist Dan Kennedy wrote in his book No B.S.: Ruthless Management of People & Profits, “hiring is a minefield. And a really easy one to step in. One of the first things I teach the business owners who are in my coaching groups is: get an assistant, but get the right one!”2
