Abstract

In the previous chapter we looked at the income distribution and its impact on economic growth. In this chapter I focus on income distribution and poverty. To the extent that it is possible, I will try to define poverty, or at least highlight the broader contours of poverty. I will explain why defining poverty is not as simple as it may sound. I will also look at the state of poverty in the United State and in other countries. What impact, if any, do formal social safety nets have on income distribution and poverty? I will try to address this question. I will also provide some thoughts on why the rich should care about the poor.
