Abstract

If the purpose of the corporation is to maximize shareholder wealth,1 it follows that the purpose of employees is to fulfill the goals of the corporation. However, employees are human beings—not cogs in wheels. Employees are human beings who do not lose their humanity when they step through the doors of the organization. In fact, using Ubuntu as an alternative guiding principle, employees become more human as they enter a collective because one’s existence is predicated on the existence of others (i.e., “I am because you are”).
