Leadership Review

Abstract

Leadership can be a messy concept. James McGregor Burns called it the “most observed and least understood phenomena on earth” (2010, 2). Management books add to the confusion, redefining leadership while obscuring the concept. Researched widely and discussed broadly, there is surprisingly little consensus on definition. Complicating the question, much of the research emanates from the West, which is largely skewed toward the masculine, and embedded within competency models and organizational mind-sets (Ciulla 2004; Eagly 2007). The changes in today’s organizations, fast-paced technology, globalization, and shifting demographics add to the fray. It is hard to believe the concept and clarification of “leadership” can both impact and determine careers. But it does.
