Abstract

Madhuri Dixit stared straight into the camera with a sultry look as the wind ruffled her hair before she launched into a song-and-dance spectacular surrounded by a chorus of young women. The young men in the cinema stamped their feet and yelled in delight. Watching a Bollywood film is pure exhilaration. It is even better when watching at the famous Raj Mandir Cinema in the northwestern Indian town of Jaipur. This single-screen cinema is a postmodern pink structure from the outside, but built like an opera house on the inside with a grand stairway, crenellated balconies, and gold trimming. The Raj Mandir echoes Hollywood’s Golden Age, when actors such as Clark Gable and Bette Davis ruled the screen and cinema was at the height of its popularity.
