Abstract

“We simply needed to reduce our costs,” one HR director told us. She worked for a nonprofit organization that consisted of just over five hundred employees. Turnover was low, most of the employees had been with the organization for several years, and people were very satisfied with their management and their jobs. But like many organizations, they were under pressure to reduce operating costs. They already had an older telecommuting policy in place, and over half of the employees worked from home on a given Friday. The organization didn’t receive any financial benefit from telecommuting employees. It was just another retention tool to ensure their highly talented employees remained happy.
