Fuels for the Future? The Emerging Architecture in China’s Liquid Biofuels Market

Abstract

Alternative transport fuels — i.e. hydrogen, natural gas, and liquid biofuels — are seen as options to help the transport sector, in the broadest sense, to decrease its dependency on oil and to reduce its negative environmental impact. Of these, liquid biofuels are the most promising in the short run as their market maturity is well above the others. They combine the advantage of broad availability of different types of feedstock and an existing supply infrastructure, and within certain limits they are compatible with conventional internal combustion engines.
