Abstract

As previously suggested, if everyone in the world were to enjoy the same level of consumption as currently enjoyed in the developed world then we would need the output of three planet Earths to support demand. This is probably true mathematically but only useful in terms of trying to make a point or to induce consumer guilt and reduce demand. The reality is that one would have to extrapolate the figures forward perhaps another millennium before that crisis would even come close and one would hope that many of the challenges we face today will have been solved by then. Not that we should simply ignore the situation until then; it’s not only tomorrow’s problem, it is the responsibility of today’s community to make sure we provide the best possible base line going forward.
