Abstract

In our studies of organizations, we discovered that individuals experience organizations as having a characteristic rhythm, shape, and feel. As members and researchers move from one organizational culture to another and from one subculture to another, they often come into contact with diverse experiences of organizational surfaces. The valuable insights derived from a study of these sensate and affect-laden dimensions of organizational life direct us to the ultimate psychological meaning of organizational structure—what might be called the embodied nature of organization. This appreciation led us to examine the unconscious nature of one of the fundamental building blocks of organizations, organizational boundaries and surfaces.
