Studying Consulting from the Inside: What Do I Mean by Consulting and How Did I Research It?

Abstract

This chapter sets the context for the study I undertook and explains why it took the shape it did. I offer my definition of consulting and describe my work setting in small scale public and not-for-profit management consulting and how it differs from the setting of most prior work on consulting. This helps me review key questions, such as: what is ‘small scale’; what is the context for my work in the public and not-for-profit sectors; what is the nature of the work people commission; what are its nature and challenges? I chart how my network of colleagues works together and describe the six pieces of work that I studied. The chapter then links these issues of context to my research approach. I chart how I designed my research both to make the most of being an insider and also to produce a rigorous study.
