Abstract

During its history India rarely was a unified entity: local dynasties, foreign invasions, colonial possession have followed one another, creating cultural, linguistic and religious specificities. However, in the past some unifying elements developed, which have helped to form Indian society since the Medieval Ages. Gathering these elements is important not only for the researcher who intends to analyse the sourcing phenomenon, but also for western companies that intend to establish production and sourcing activities in this market and who are confronted with a social and institutional context quite different from the domestic one.
