Abstract

First of all, we’d like to highlight something that Miguel Muñiz said in the previous chapter; something that has a bearing on a recurrent theme of this book: ‘He [the General Manager] can only say “this is the project, do you all agree?”’. These words confirm our ideas about how to manage brain force. Of course, in the theatre the talent has to be ‘managed’ according to very different standards and norms than those of a traditional company: Muñiz cannot order people in the Teatro Real. How can he give orders to people like Jesús López Cobos, someone whose musical talent is universally recognised? Or Antonio Moral, the Artistic Director, who Muñiz appointed precisely because he is a leading authority in opera? It would not only be absurd, it would also be destructive. You do not, Muñiz tells us, order people of talent. You give them objectives, and then you leave them free to achieve them.
