The Energy Industry

Abstract

This chapter is based on empirical evidence gathered from 44 personal interviews (22 in the oil and gas industry, 13 in the utility sector and nine with external stakeholders), and 205 completed mail, fax and on-line questionnaires (30 completed by sustainability officers and 175 by general managers, that is non-experts on sustainability). We gratefully acknowledge the participation of the BG Group, ConocoPhillips, EON, the European Commission, ExxonMobil, Friends of the Earth UK, Fortum Oyj, Gaz de France, Greenpeace Germany, the International Energy Agency, Norsk Hydro, Royal Dutch/Shell, RAG, RWE, Scottish Power, Suez, Total, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Economic Forum.
