Economic Reforms in Nepal: Performance and Prospects

Abstract

This review of the reform agenda and performance of the Nepalese economy consists of six sections. Section 4.1 previews the background and constraints to the liberalizing economic reforms undertaken from the early 1990s. Section 4.2 gives a brief summary of the actual reform process that has unfolded. Sections 4.3 and 4.4 assess the impact of the reforms on economic growth and on poverty and inequality, respectively. Section 4.5 contains a brief discussion of future economic prospects and challenges facing Nepal and the future reform agenda. The last section draws together some conclusions.
