Abstract

There are two ways to look at wholesaling in Japan. One way is to admit that the wholesale sector remains an influential and important part of distribution, far and above that in most other industrialized nations. This is true, but the importance of wholesaling increasingly varies from one merchandise category to another. In food and household products, wholesalers cling to traditional systems, but in others, such as apparel, they have become something of an irrelevance, except when firms that originated as wholesalers have moved on to become retailers in their own right.
