Abstract

South Asian migration to the USA has lagged behind the settlement of the Diaspora to other countries. The relatively new population of first-generation South Asian migrants have a strong starting base than their counterparts had both in terms of internal (educational) resources and the opportunities in the wider economy. This chapter draws together various aspects of the debate on ethnic entrepreneurship in the United States to create a platform for the next chapter that will discuss the findings from the case studies in more detail. The first section begins with an overview of literature specific to the United States. The next section generates a profile of the South Asian community and, more specifically, the Indian and Pakistani groups (including the East African Asian community) based on the recent 2001 Census figures.
