Abstract

Asian settlement across the globe has been extensive, both in terms of geography and depth. Trading was the earlier impetus for movement as merchants sought out opportunities to conquer virgin territories. Over time this heritage has become a powerful force in the momentum of Asian migration particularly in the latter half of the twentieth century (Seidenberg, 1996). In the quest for new opportunities the Asian Diaspora has spread itself far and wide, thereby creating a broad network strengthened by economic and cultural ties. Through the institutionalisation of business activity, members of this migrant community have created an identity of entrepreneurial resilience, although this has been somewhat over-exaggerated in certain circumstances leading to claims of the Asian ‘Midas touch’.
