Abstract

Before entering a mentoring relationship, both mentor and mentee need to be clear about their expectations of the relationship: what are the benefits to help sustain motivation but what are some of the potential risks? There are benefits for mentors as well as mentees. Mentors are sometimes surprised at the learning they gain from a mentoring relationship. Mentees are likely to gain in the short and longer term. However, entering a mentoring relationship is not without certain risks. Some of the contents of this chapter have already appeared in Chapter 8, but are repeated here as mentors and mentees need to be quite clear what they can realistically expect from the relationship and be mindful of the risks.
