Abstract

How individuals conduct relationships across all aspects of their life and work can be a window on how they perceive and experience interdependence as an element of those relationships. Yet many of us do not clarify how we value different interactions with people as individuals or as representatives of organisations until challenged by a barrier or breakdown. This is exacerbated in societies which increasingly promote the individual as the norm, leading to the conclusion that interdependence is an oxymoron. However, every day in some way most of us will unconsciously experience some degree of reliance on someone else to do their job. Such functional relationships are a useful place to begin thinking about interdependence: the train driver who took you safely to work, the barista who made your coffee this morning and the bank administrator who processed your salary so there was money to pay for your train ticket and coffee.
