The Ferranti Company

Abstract

As essentially a family-owned firm, Ferranti is unique among the companies studied in this thesis. The other companies we will be looking at, RCA, IBM and English Electric all had powerful autocrats leading them who passed control of the firm to their sons. However, the actions of these father-son dynasties were tempered by the need to satisfy external sources of capital, and by the non-family board members. Ferranti was less bound by this issue. Because of this ownership structure, Ferranti was a firm carrying an unusually large historical legacy. It is important to understand the history of Ferranti so that the strategy it adopted in the computer industry can be seen in proper context.
