Abstract

Debate in China about the country’s market and related economic reforms is continuing. Relevant questions include the extent to which markets increase economic efficiency, whether the market system results in a just or socially acceptable distribution of income, and the extent to which the market-related reforms add to inflation. A number of these matters were discussed in the previous chapter. All are important questions. But in some ways, a more fundamental question is whether separating the management of business enterprises from their ownership will improve their economic efficiency and the performance of the Chinese economy.
