Abstract

The chapters in this section stress the importance of the external environment for the company’s innovation capabilities. With increasing global competition, it has become increasingly evident that, on the one hand, firms no longer can rely on their own resources for development of innovation, and on the other hand, that social and market acceptance of innovation plays an increasing role in the diffusion of new profitable ideas. This section considers these problems from two somehow complementary perspectives: the first looks at the role of proximity as a spur to industrial innovation, while the other focuses on the complexity of market and social forces in fostering innovation within and among firms. However, common to both is the role of linkages between firms, their complexity and their relationship with the actors external to the networks.
