Abstract

The last two chapters have examined for Bangladesh growth in overall crop output and productivity per unit area with particular emphasis on foodgrains (rice and wheat). The purpose of this chapter is to concentrate on deriving growth rates of foodgrain production and yield at a more disaggregated level, that is by districts, and use the results for comparative purposes. Recent studies of Bangladeshi agriculture (Alauddin and Mujeri, 1986a; 1986b; Chaudhury, 1981b; M. Hossain, 1980) have identified discernible regional patterns in the pace of growth of agricultural crop output in Bangladesh.
