From Economic Integration to Economic Co-operation: Institutional Initiatives

Abstract

In the mid-1960s, there were vigorous efforts to unite the Asia-Pacific region in some form of economic integration. It was largely a knee-jerk reaction to the formation of the Economic Community (EC) in another part of the globe. The region’s economic diversity and the fast expansion of international trade increased economic interdependence in the region. Furthermore, brisk growth and the outward-orientated economic policies followed by the economies of the Asia-Pacific region had brought them closer together. These countries also felt that they were being discriminated against by the established economic powers. A variety of institutional initiatives were taken for regional economic unification. These endeavours can be divided into three phases. The earliest initiative, in the 1960s, aimed at the formation of a formal free-trade area. This zeal cooled off in the 1970s, and various regional economic co-operation schemes were carefully studied. They were found to be more suitable for the region.
