Abstract

Our attention in this study will be focused on the dynamics of accumulation: the role of mechanization and technical change; the relationship among, and trends of, the major macroeconomic proportions; the source and nature of cyclical behavior and crisis. It is important, however, to begin by emphasizing that these accumulation dynamics are dynamics of capitalism.The term ‘capitalism’ is often used loosely, at times giving the impression that a precise definition is not essential to the argument. In fact, the term is sometimes used as an epithet, to be applied to any reality one wishes to condemn; this is certainly the case with ‘radical’ characterizations of the former Soviet Union as ‘state capitalism’, which portray capital as a disembodied evil that can occupy any social form at will.
