Abstract

Since 1950 the proportion of wives under 60 who work has risen from 25 to 60 per cent. Although this is one of the major transformations of our time, its causes are little understood. Many people, if asked, would attribute the change to the falling birth rate. Yet, as Figure 11.1 shows, the fertility rate rose during much of the period when female participation also rose. And participation rose sharply among women aged 25–34 as well as among older women.1 Another possible explanation is the rising real wage of husbands and wives. While one might expect the income effect of these improvements to discourage work, the positive substitution effect of better opportunities for women is likely to outweigh any negative cross-substitution effect of the husband’s wage increase. So one asks whether wage changes, among other things, can help to explain the transformation in the working role of women.
