Abstract

A civilized society encourages its citizens to excel in all the endeavours they undertake. The motto of a civilized society is ‘if a thing is worth doing it is worth doing well’. A civilized society encourages the maintenance of love and loyalty to the community, sensitivity and compassion to the needs of others, open and honest dealing with others, and all actions necessary to perpetuate and strengthen the civil order of the community. To motivate all its citizens to behave in a civil manner while achieving these objectives, a prosperous civil society adopts a set of rules (or laws) that combine self-interest and civic values so that its citizens may enjoy the benefits of each.
